Pikesville, Md (KM) High school and college students interested in careers in law enforcement can sign up now for the 2021 Youth Leadership and Law Enforcement Seminar It’s sponsored by the Maryland State Police and takes place at the State Police Training Academy in Sykesville. . “So this is an opportunity for young people who are interested in a career in law enforcement to have a first hand experience to train like a trooper and learn what it takes to be a trooper,” says spokesman Ron Snyder.

Between Friday, August 13th, and Sunday, August 15th, Snyder says these young men and women will learn about Maryland law, military drill and ceremony, fitness, defensive tactics and other subjects.  He says this program will help; participants determine if law enforcement is a career they want to pursue. “If they have an interest, they can see what they like and what they don’t like,” he says. “We have so many opportunities within the Maryland State Police.”

State troopers and civilian employees from specialized units will share their experiences with these young people.

Anyone who wants to participate needs to submit a two-minute, self-taped video, or a written essay on why they want a career in law enforcement. The deadline is July 1st. Each barrack commander will choose one candidate from their jurisdictions  and Baltimore city to attend the seminar.

This is the second Youth Leadership and Law Enforcement Seminar. Snyder says one took place last year. But because 2020 was the 100th anniversary of the Amendment to the US Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote, Snyder says this seminar was limited to women. “We had a really good turnout last year, even in the middle of a pandemic,” he says.

This year’s seminar is open  to both men and women. “This year with positivity rates going down and life slowly returning to normal, we’re expecting it to be an even more rewarding experience this year, with even more people will apply, come out and see what it’s all about being a member of the Maryland State Police,” says Snyder.
