Frederick, Md (KM) In honor of Juneteenth, Frederick County Government agencies will be closed on Friday, June 18th. But some services will still be available. The County’s Public Libraries and the Landfill on Reichs Ford Road will be open, and Parks and Recreation programs will continue as scheduled. “Frederick County has celebrated Juneteenth with proclamation ceremonies for years, and I am pleased to now honor the occasion as a national holiday,” said County Executive Jan Gardner, in a statement. “As a nation, we must continue to work toward ensuring freedom and justice for all Americans.”

Frederick City offices,  Maryland state offices and the courts will also be closed on Friday.

Congress has passed a law making Juneteenth–June 19th–a national holiday. President Biden is expected to sign it.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is actually on June 19th, but because the 19th falls on a Saturday, Juneteenth is being observed on Friday.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas were told they had been freed under President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863.
