New Volunteer Fire & Rescue Chief Appointed For Frederick County

Frederick, Md. (KM)  Assistant Chief M. Shane Darwick has been appointed Frederick County’s Director of Fire Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services. He takes over from Kevin Fox who has retired.

In this position, Darwick will be supporting the work of, and coordinates with, the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies.

The County Council approved his appointment Tuesday afternoon.

According to a county news release, Darwick joined Frederick County as an Assistant Chief of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services in 2019, bringing 47 years of experience in career and  volunteer fire and rescue services. Darwick retired from the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service after 35 years, reaching the rank of Battalion Chief. Before coming to Frederick County, he was the Training Center Manager for Carroll County Fire Volunteer Emergency Services Association.

During his fire career, Darwick served on the National Capital Region Incident Management Team and Maryland Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team. He is certified as an Emergency Service Instructor III and a University of Maryland Fire Rescue Institute Instructor.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University and an Occupational Certificate in emergency management from Frederick Community College.
