Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund To Host Two Upcoming Events In Frederick

Both will be held in October.

Frederick, MD (KB) Patty Hurwitz is the founder of the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, I was 44 years old,” she said. “At that time, there was no comprehensive breast program here in Frederick. We had to go to Baltimore for all of my treatments, and that was a lot, a lot, a lot of trips down there.”

Hurwitz and her husband, Jeff, wanted to bring comprehensive breast cancer treatment closer to Frederick, so they established the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund.

“I just want to make things better for other women, and I don’t want other women to, you know, go through–to have to go through that,” she said. The Fund has raised $2.2 million dollars in its 22 years.

Hurwitz said the Fund has two major events coming up in October.

“The [Pink Ribbon] Gala will be on October 23rd, and that will be live, again, at New Spire Stages with Dueling Pianos and great food by Dutch’s Daughter,” Hurwitz explained. “We’re really looking forward to that event.”

She said the Pink Ribbon 5K will also take place in-person this year at Hood College on October 10th. There will be a virtual option for those who cannot participate in-person.

Hurwitz said the goal is to raise $200,000 dollars this year between the two events. She said they were able to reach that goal two years ago.

“It’s really the generosity of this Frederick community. I’ve just always been blown away how supportive and generous they are,” Hurwitz stated. “When there’s a cause they step up, and we’ve just been blessed by that.”

Money from the fund goes to support local patient care in Frederick.

Hurwitz said five premiere sponsors have shown their support for both events, including: Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research/Leidos Biomed, Krietz Auto, The Laughlin Family Foundation, Ceresville New Holland, Inc, and Sandy Spring Bank.
