Frederick, Md (NS) On Thursday night the Board of Aldermen approved a contract to buy the Gov. William Donald Schaefer Building at 100 E. All Saints Street in downtown Frederick for $6,000,000 to serve as the new Police Headquarters.

The purchase of the four-story, 65,000-square-foot building will also include $50,000 for a feasibility study to determine the cost of the work that will be needed to repurpose the building.

Police Chief Jason Lando said this is a long time coming, “(the current building) is just not up to par with the needs of a modern day police department.”

He said the current building is fit for a police force half the size and that there’s a moisture issue that threatens to damage evidence.

Lando said the new building includes room for expansion, “We will plan to occupy the first 3 floors initially and leave the last floor for future growth.”

The building will have room for community events and programs like the crisis response team, traffic safety team and multi-cultural liaison unit.

Lando said the building is expected to be ready for move-in late 2023 to mid 2024.
