Frederick, Md (KM) The Frederick County Grand Jury returned seven indictments on Friday. One was against  Lafayette Thompson Sheffield, 46, of Capital Heights, whose charged with attempted carjacking robbery, 2nd-degree assault, attempted motor vehicle theft, possession with intent to distribute Cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession of paraphernalia for an incident which occurred on July 20th, 2021.

State Attorney Charlie Smith  says Sheffield tried to steal a taxi. Police were called to the unit block of South East Street at 8:25 AM. They were told that Sheffield asked the driver for a ride to a store. He indicated he had a gun, and intended to take the vehicle. Authorities say he choked the cabbie and tried to gain access to the vehicle. He ran away when bystanders stopped to help.

Police say a resident reported a man hiding around along B&O Avenue and Water Street. Officers went to the scene. “They find  the defendant hiding a short time later,” says Smith. “They also found  some white powdered substance on him which is  why he’s also charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine. There was a good chunk of powder there.”

Also indicted was Joshua Colonna Jones, 29, of Frederick, whose charged with arson threat, failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order of a police officer, 2nd-degree assault, resisting arrest, 1st-degree assault, 2nd-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, 2nd-degree assault and malicious destruction of property of $1,000 and up.

Smith says Jones was arrested for an incident on July 22nd. Police say he tried to gain entry into the Beacon House on West South Street. “He was uncooperative. He started uttering threats, saying he was going to blow up the place. He claimed he had items in his backpack necessary to do so,” says Smith. “Police arrived. They intervened, tried to get him off the property. He wasn’t happy about that so he turns and punches an officer in the head.” Jones was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
