SkyPoint Federal Credit Union will be giving away bookbags with school supplies.
Frederick, Md (KM) The first day of school for Frederick County Public School students is August 18th, and SkyPoint Federal Credit Union is helping out. The company is supporting the National Back-to-School Prep Day being held at Heritage Frederick at 24 East Church Street on Saturday, August 14th from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. . “It’s main goal is supervised support and resources for families in preparation for the new school year,” says Audra Pettus, Director of Community Relations With SKyPoint.
She says part of the event includes giving away back-to-school kits. “We will be providing over 100 backpacks that are pre-filled with school supplies: notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, erasers, just a plethora of essential classroom items,” Pettus says.
She says this upcoming school year takes on a different meaning this time. “This is the first time that many of these students are returning to school since March of 2020,” Pettus says. “It’s more significant this year than it has been in previous years because the schools and the families and students are in need of much more support as they’ve been out of the building for a year and a half.”
Many school closed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the backpack giveaway, there will be other activities such as scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, a Civil War presentation, a blacksmithing demonstration, and COVID-19 vaccinations being administered by the Frederick County Health Department.
This event is sponsored by Heritage Frederick, but is supported by SkyPoint Federal Credit Union. Pettus says it’s a way for the company to give back to the Frederick County community. She says SkyPoint will be supporting first Saturday in downtown Frederick in October.
