Smoke will be visible from Catoctin Mountain during that time.
Fredeick, Md (KM) There will be a prescribed burn between November 8th and the 10th at the City of Frederick Watershed property. It will take place off of Gambrill Park Road, and will restore a stand of pitch pine which is about 90 years old.
Officials say the burn will reduce competing vegetation, and help open pitch pine cones, which need fire to open. The seeds are described as a food source for wildlife, and will help a new generation of seedlings to grow.
During the burn, smoke will be visible on Catoctin Mountain. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources fire staff will be hand to direct the fire, and draw water from a nearby fire pond if necessary.
There are no homes or other structures in the area.
During this burn, Gambrill Park Road between Fishing Creek Road and Gate R6 will be closed. All trails in the northeast corner of the watershed will also be closed.
The city says the prescribed burn will only take place if conditions are favorable on one day during the three-day window.
