The Frederick man is charged with 1srt-degree murder for the death of his girlfriend.
Frederick, Md (KM) The jury heard from a crucial prosecution witness on Friday in the trial of Ricky Cartnail, 17, of Frederick. He’s being charged as an adult with 1st-degree murder for the shooting death last year of Tykerria Dawson, 17, of Hagerstown.
State’s Attorney Charlie Smith says Caliyah Lobaugh, 16, of Frederick was a witness to Dawson’s murder. He says Lobaugh, who was only 14 at the time of the slaying, testified that Cartnail and Dawson had a fight on June 27th, 2020.
“He called her some choice words. They became aggressive. And he became aggressive toward Tykerria, stated to her {Lobaugh} that Tykerria needed to be taken out,” says Smith.,
He says Cartnail Told Lobaugh to meet him on the other side of Ballenger Creek, and hand a backpack to him. He said he was planning to shoot her, claiming Dawson lied to her and she was pregnant.
“Obviously, she detailed several times, including the fact that Ricky {Cartnail} arrived, took gloves and gun out of backpack, placed the gun in his waistband, tossed the victim’s phone in the creek,” Smith continues. “She saw Ricky put his arm over Tykerria’s shoulder and then she heard the gunshots.”
Dawson’s body was found in a wooded area off of Briargrove Court in the Ballenger Creek area. Smith says evidence at the scene linked Cartnail to Dawson’s murder.
Smith says the State is expected to rest its case sometime next week, and then the defense will have its opportunity to call witnesses and present evidence. He anticipates the jury will get the case later next week.
