Off Duty Montgomery County Police Officer Dies Following A Traffic Crash

Authorities say he was having a medical crisis prior to the crash.

Rockville, Md. (KM) – Montgomery County Police are mourning the death of one of their own. Authorities say on Friday morning, Officer Douglas Haggerty, who was off duty, was traveling eastbound on Spenceville Road taking his nine-year-old daughter to school when he suffered a medical crisis.  His car crashed. .

Police and fire and rescue personnel responded and performed life-saving measures on Officer Haggerty. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His daughter was able to get out and call 911 after the crash. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Officer Haggerty was 36-years-old and had been with Montgomery County Police since July. 2010. He was serving as an officer with the Rockville District when he died. Haggerty had previously served as a patrol officer in the Silver Spring District.
