Surplus Property In Dearbought Area Expected To Become Affordable Housing Project For Seniors

Frederick, Md. (KM) – A project which is expected to provide 190 affordable housing units for senior citizens in Frederick County took another step forward this week. In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the County Council declared a parcel along Sebastian Boulevard and Route 26 east of Frederick city surplus property. That means it can be transferred to a developer who will build the housing units.

“We as a Council support the original intent transferring this land for the purpose of senior housing,” says Hugh Gordon, the Vice Chair of the Affordable Housing Council. “And that was the original intent.”

The property which is just over ten-acres was donated to the Board of Education for use as a school site. But the Board said it didn’t need the property and it was transferred to the County.

Gordon says the need for senior housing in Frederick County is “tremendous.” “Over the last two years during COVID, I think it’s probably only gotten worse,” he says.

He hopes this project will help. “This project, this community, would go toward beginning to answer that problem,” says Gordon.

The developer of the project is Taft Mills Group, LLC, a limited liability company from North Carolina.
