Gerald Wayne Koogle charged with attempted first degree murder

Hagerstown, Md. (DG) – A Hagerstown man is behind bars after firing at police and threatening a woman.

A woman called 911 late Friday night, and dispatchers heard her say a man was threatening her before the call disconnected.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home in the 16,900 block of Longfellow Court. Police knocked on the front door and could hear 42-year-old Gerald Wayne Koogle yelling inside. Police tried to get him to the door, but he refused.

Koogle then shot through the window at police several times. No one was injured. A woman left the home and was taken to safety by police.

Two other people in the house were safely removed through negotiating, and Koogle later surrendered to police.

Deputies issued a search and seizure warrant for Koogle’s home and removed guns and ammunition.

Koogle is charged with attempted first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, and possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle. He is being held at the Washington County Detention Center.
