Baltimore, Md. (KM) – A Frederick County businessman was sentenced last week to 18-months in prison for wire fraud conspiracy. Joseph Liberto, 47, of New Windsor was also placed on 12-months of home detention and three-years of supervised release.
The US Attorney’s Office for Maryland says Liberto who was president of Sierra Construction, LLC of Frederick, was contracted to do repair services to US Postal Service facilities. Between 2013 and 2018, federal officials say Liberto contracted with EMCOR-CSC to provide the repair services. EMCOR acted as a clearing house which received calls for needed maintenance and repair work for its customers.
According to his plea agreement, Liberto engaged in a fraud scheme with EMCOR and the US Postal Service by concealing Sierra’s use of subcontractors to do maintenance work, inflating the cost of hours and repairs. The company obtained more than $940,000 through fraudulent over billing.
Part of Liberto’s sentence requires him to pay restitution of over $941,629.17 , along with a $100,000 fine. The fine must be paid by the time he reports to prison on September 10th, 2022.
Liberto was sentenced on Friday, June tenth.
