Camp Airy Building Damaged By Fire Considered Total Loss

Estimated damage is $2-million.

Thurmont, Md. (KM) – The Frederick County Fire Marshal’s Office says the building at Camp Airy which was damaged by fire on Wednesday morning is total loss with a damage estimate at $2-million . Authorities say the cause remains under investigation, but officials say the fire was not intentionally set, or suspicious.

The Division of Fire and Rescue Services says fire fighters were dispatched at around 7:30 AM on Wednesday to 14938 Old Camp Airy Road for a building fire.  A Frederick County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer and a Maryland State Trooper were on the  scene and saw smoke on the second floor of the building which had been evacuated.

Fire fighters arriving on the  scene located the fire in a dining hall, and called for a rapid intervention dispatch and a tanker task force ferry water to the site.  . They also requested a second alarm.

100 fire fighters from Maryland and Pennsylvania spent three hours bringing the flames under control. No one was injured. . All campers and staff were relocated to a different part of the camp.

Personal remained on the scene to put out hot spots throughout the morning. Fire  fighters were brought back to the scene  to put out any flames which rekindled. Fire officials say more than 85,000 gallons of water was used on the structure to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.

W&F Delauter and Sons provided an excavator to assist with moving debris so fire fighters could gain access to material that was still smoldering.
