Two Arrested For Armed Robbery Of A Convenience Store in Frederick

They were taken into custody shortly after police arrived on the scene.

Frederick, Md. (KM) – Two men have been arrested in connection with the armed robbery of a convenience store in Frederick. Markel Demar Lyles-Smith, 24, of Rockville, and Jaleiqk Cortez Onley, 20, of Frederick were apprehended early Friday morning.

Both are being held without bond.

At around 12:30 AM, Frederick Police and the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the store in the 200 block of Amber Drive for a holdup. They started gathering  suspect information from a victim and witnesses. Officers and deputies set up a perimeter and started a canvass to locate the suspects.

A  deputy saw a suspicious vehicle at around 12:30 AM occupied by two men who fit the description of the suspects, and it was pulled over.  Lyles-Smith and Onley were taken into custody.

Authorities say Lyles-Smith was found to be in possession of a 9-mm black Beretta handgun and 45-grams of crack cocaine.

Police say their investigation determined that a woman drove the two men to an area near the convenience store. She was told to wait as   Lyles-Smith and Onley said they were going to buy her marijuana. They then robbed the store at gunpoint and got back into the vehicle.

Police say Lyles-Smith is charged with:

  • Possession with intent to distribute Crack Cocaine
  • Possession of Crack Cocaine
  • Possession with intent to distribute Crack Cocaine within 1000 feet of a school zone
  • Armed Robbery
  • Conspiracy to commit Armed Robbery
  • Use of Firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Handgun in vehicle
  • Loaded handgun in vehicle
  • Handgun on person
  • Loaded handgun on person
  • Onley is charged with:
  • Armed Robbery
  • Conspiracy to commit Armed Robbery

Authorities say this was a coordinated effort between the Frederick Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office and the State’s Attorney’s Office.
