A replacement project has been completed.
Frederick, Md. (KM) – The Maryland Route 355 bridge over Bennett Creek in Frederick County is set to open this week. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration says the original span built in 1924 has been replaced. The $20.1 million project began in 2019, and has been completed.
The new bridge contains improvements to reduce future flooding. It stands three-feet higher than the old structure allowing more water from Bennett Creek to flow underneath.
“MDOT SHA is committed to protecting and enhancing the natural environment,” says MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith, in a statement. “This project stabilizes 2,300 feet of Bennett Creek and realigned the channel to help prevent future erosion and flooding.”
While construction was underway, a temporary roadway along Md. Rt. 355 was built to keep the traffic moving. That temporary roadway is being removed.
Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, performed the work.
