The IAABO will hold a new training class starting Wednesday.
Frederick, Md. (NS) – Basketball referees are needed in Frederick County. Doug Gardner, Vice President of the International Association Of Approved Basketball Officials in Frederick County (IAABO), said COVID-19 caused about 30% of their refs to leave because they had to find other work.
“Some people use refereeing to supplement their income, and when the games went away, because the county had a very limited schedule two years ago, which cut a lot of our officials out of possible income,” said Gardner.
He said a new training session is about to start this week.
“We hold the training every fall. It’s usually an 8 week course. This year, we’re starting on a Wednesday instead of Tuesday. The first class will be the 17th at Walkersville High School from 6 – 9,” Gardner explained.
He encouraged women to apply and said it is a great way to make supplemental income and serve the community.
