New Manager Named For Frederick Keys

Rene Rivera played catcher for several Major League Baseball teams.

Frederick, Md (KM) The Frederick Keys will have a new manager this season. The team announced that Rene Rivera will take over the position, replacing Joe Oliver who guided the Keys to a 34-40 record during the 2022 season.  Rivera is the Keys’ 25 the manager in its history.

Rivera spent 13 years playing catcher in the Major Leagues. In 2001, he was drafted a second round pick by the Seattle Mariners in the MLB June Amateur Draft. Rivera made his debut with the Mariners on September 22nd, 2004 against the Anaheim Angels not long after he turned 21. He’s currently 39 years of age.

He’s also played for Minnesota, San Diego, the New York Mets, the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Cleveland and Washington. Rivera recently retired as a Major League ball player.

The 2023 season with the Frederick Keys will be his first as a manager. “I’m excited to begin this next chapter in my career and I’m looking forward to working with high school and college players as they begin their journey,” Rivera says, in a statement. “Frederick will be a great place to begin my coaching career and help future players live out their dreams of playing in the big leagues.”

The Frederick Keys are founding members of the Major League  Baseball Draft League. The team was a part of the Baltimore Orioles farm network for many years.

The team’s new season starts on June 1st, 2023. The Keys’ first home game at Nymeo Field is on June 3rd. .
