Social media challenge blamed for nationwide spike in auto thefts

Pikesville, MD (MO) Maryland State Police are warning drivers that they could be the next victim of a TIK TOK social media challenge that encourages people to steal certain models of Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

Maryland State Police Spokesperson Kyleigh Beaver said this TIK TOK video challenge has kept law enforcement busy.

“Anytime there is a social media message out there detailing how to violate the law it definitely presents challenges to law enforcement officers,” Beaver said. “As you know that they work daily to protect the lives and property of Maryland citizens of the citizens they serve.”

State Police are reminding all drivers to be vigilant when securing their vehicles.

The Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council issued a warning to owners of these vehicles to reach out to the manufacturers to see about free security software upgrades. Owners who are interested in reaching out can contact Hyundai at 1-800-663-5151 or Kia at 1-800-333-4542
