Man Drowns In Potomac River Near Knoxville

He entered the River to get to a rock island.

Frederick, Md (KM) A Montgomery County man drown in the Potomac River on Tuesday afternoon. .

Maryland Natural Resources Police say Daniel Aldazbal Cucho, 44, of Germantown was fishing on the Maryland Side of the River with two friends near Lock 33 in Knoxville. Cucho went into the Potomac, and tried to get to a rock island. He called for help from his friends after he entered the River.   They tired to help him, but couldn’t.

Fire and rescue crews from surrounding jurisdictions, including Frederick County, responded and spent two hours using boats trying to locate Cucho, but to no avail.

His body was recovered by a Natural Resources Police dive team.

A medic on the Jefferson County, West Virginia side of the River attempted to save Cucho’s life after he was pulled out of the Potomac, but he was pronounced dead.

The West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating.
