This is ninth year the race will take place in Frederick.
Frederick, Md. (BW)- The National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race will take place on the streets of downtown Frederick on Saturday, July 15.
The qualifying rounds of the race begin at noon with the championship round starting at 2 p.m.
Before the championship round begins, there will be a mountain bike trick show and a low wheel race.
The course for the races start on North Market Street and continues onto West Second Street, Record Street and West Church Street before returning to North Market Street for the finish. Streets will close to motorists at 11 a.m.
The race consists of 54 participants who come from all over the world.
High wheel racing comes from Europe and is also popular in Australia. A high wheel bike was popular in the 1870’s and 1880’s.
Co-Director of the race, Eric Rhodes said that he went to a high wheel race in England and thought of brining the idea back to the United States. There is currently no other race like this in America.
There will also be food trucks and live music at City Hall, which sits in the middle of the looped race course.
