Montgomery County, Md. (BW)- The Montgomery County Council passed a bill Tuesday placing limits on how much landlords could increase rent.
Bill 15-34, also known as the “Anti-Goughing Bill” caps rent increases at 3% over inflation or 6% of the base rent pay, whichever is less.
County Executive Marc Elrich said this provides relief to renters, who make up 35% of the county population.
The bill passed in a 7-4 vote. Those opposed were Marilyn Balcombe, Dawn Luedtke, Gabe Albornoz and Andrew Friedson.
The bill will take effect in April 2024.
