Earthquake Occurred In Montgomery County January 2, 2024

The United States Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake of magnitude 2.3 occurred shortly before 1 AM January 2, 2024,  in Montgomery County, Maryland.

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 9.5 miles, about 1.8 miles west of Rockville.

The earthquake happened while most people were sleeping. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

In less than an hour, the USGS received more than 850 reports about the earthquake. Most people describing the quake’s effects as minor.
