Hagerstown, Md (KM) The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration says a deck improvement project is underway on the US 40 (National Pike) bridges over Interstate 70 near Hagerstown.
Crews will be applying an epoxy overlay which is expected to extend the spans’ service l life. . MDOT SHA says one lane on each bridge will be closed in one direction.
To make sure the epoxy adheres properly, MDOT SHA says crews will need to remove sections of the existing bridge deck and work behind barrier walls.
Other tasks being performed on the two bridges include replacing various parts such as the concrete overlays, parapets and curbs. Concrete barriers, overhangs, end posts, slots and check walls will be installed, Sections of traffic barriers, expansion joints, drainage troughs and downspouts will be replaced. Among other tasks, there will be milling and overlaying the asphalt paving. The contractor will also replace the elastomeric bearings and steel bearings, and install a new fence and ground mounted sings. There will also be cleaning and painting both bridges and applying sealant to the bridge decks, according to MDOT SHA.
The contractor, Triton Construction of St. Albans, WV, will use cones and barrels to guide motorists safely through the work zone.
The installation of new barriers will require a closure with traffic being detoured to South Potomac Street (Md 65) and Mapleville Road (Md 66), according to MDOT SHA.
The project is expected to be completed in 2025 weather permitting. The cost is $8,9 million.
