Frederick, Md (KM) In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, the County Council approved two amendments to the South Frederick Corridors Plan.
One would add a second middle school site to the area covered by the plan That came at the request of Frederick County Public Schools. A representative from FCPS told the Council last week with 1300 middle school students projected for the area near the city of Frederick which is covered by the plan, and the Board of Education’s policy of planning for 900-seat middle schools, the additional capacity is needed. The plan had already called for one middle school.
This amendment was co-sponsored by Councilman Steve McKay. “We heard the request from FCPS that they needed an additional middle school site. Staff worked on this amendment. Happy to co-sponsor it,”: he said.
The other sponsor was Council Vice President Kavonte Duckett.
The South Frederick Corridors Plan covers a 6.3-square-mile area with I-70 to the north, the Monocacy River to the east, and New Design Road to the west. It’s where residential development is planned because the infrastructure to support it is located there. In addition to the two middle schools, the plan also calls for four new elementary schools, and one new high school in that area.
The second amendment has to do with bringing private roads up to standards with public roads.
The Council is expected to take a vote on the entire plan at a later date.
