Swimming is discouraged, but fishing and boating are still permitted.
Frederick, Md (KM) The Frederick County Health Department is reminding residents to avoid two areas due to sewage overflows. One is the Mount Saint Mary’s campus east of US 15 from Saint Mary’s Run to Toms Creek to the Monocacy River. The other is the Monocacy River from Route 144 to Route 80, or Fingerboard Road, from Pinecliff Park to Buckeystown Park.
Officials say swimming and full body immersion should be avoided due to the sewage overflows. If you come into contact with the water, wash yourself thoroughly with soap and warm water, especially before eating.
Boating and fishing are still permitted in these waters. The fish caught in these waters may be safe to consume if they’re cleaned, scaled and cooked.
Pet owners should also keep their pets away from these waters. the Health Department says.
In addition, rivers at flood levels should always be avoided for general safety reasons and potential contaminants, say health officials.
People should avoid those two areas for about two weeks, until around April 17th.
