Gaithersburg, Md (IKM) A 35-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department has been nominated as chief. Assistant Chief Marc Yamada was introduced to reporters on Wednesday morning by County Executive Marc Elrich. Yamada says he’s been with the department since 1988. “During that time, the members of this department have accomplished great things. They’ve solved cases that were considered unsolvable; the Lyons sisters case; the murder of Montgomery County Sheriff Captain James Hall. They also helped capture the DC snipers, and altogether, we overcame the pandemic,” he said.
Yamada’s nomination needs to be approved by the Montgomery County Council.
During the news conference, Yamada outlined the goals he wants to accomplish as chief. “As we move forward, I’m committing to enhancing our community policing efforts, strengthening our relationships with the residents we serve, and ensuring our officers have the resources to perform their duties safely, and to provide the highest quality police services possible, ” he said.
He also made this promise to officers. “I’ve always considered it an honor to work alongside you. I will always support you. I’m always willing to sit down and talk, and listen to what you have to say,” Yamada says.
To the citizens the department serves, he says. “Your safety and wellbeing are our top priorities. We are committed to working with you. . Your safety and wellbeing are our priorities as we create a more united and safer county,”; says Yamada.
If he is chosen by the County Council, Yamada will be the 18th police chief in Montgomery County. He would also be the first Asian-American and American of Japanese ancestry to serve as chief.
He would replace Marcus Jones who will be retiring as chief on July 1st.
