Washington County Sheriff’s Office Reminding Citizens To Be Aware

Authorities say a person claiming to be from their agency is conducting a scam.

Hagerstown, Md (KM) The scammers are at it again. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says citizens have reported that a Major Todd Kerns from the agency has been calling them and demanding money, or they will be arrested. The Sheriff’s Office says Major Kerns is not calling residents demanding money to avoid a warrant. These people are even spoofing the Sheriff’s Office phone number.

Authorities say it’ not them. They say no law enforcement agency will contact you and demand money to address court orders, jury duty, warrants and other issues The Sheriff’ Office says these issues are addressed by the courts.

There are things a scammer would say, according to the Sheriff’s Office; and that should be a red flag to citizens.

“Act Now” is a scam. Authorities say scammers  are pressuring you to act quickly, and not giving you any time to think it over.

“Don’t trust anyone. They’re in on it” is a way for scammers to cut you off from  anyone who might urge you to slow down.

“Do {this} or you will be arrested.” The Sheriff’s Office says this threat is a lie.

“Don’t hang up” is also a scam.. Someone wants to keep on the phone while you withdraw cash from your bank account so you can transfer money, or buy gift cards. In this case, authorities say it’s best to hang up.

There are things a scammer will tell you to do. One is “Move your money to protect it.” No one will who is legitimate will tell you to transfer or withdraw money from your bank account, or investments accounts.

“Withdraw your money and buy gold bars” is also a scam. If you’re interested in investing  in gold bars., take the time to think before you act.

“Withdraw cash an give it to {anyone}” is a scam. Authorities say don’t give it to a courier; don’t’ deliver it to  anyone;, don’t send it.

“Go to an Bitcoin ATM” should also raise a red flag. The Sheriff’s Office says it’s a scam. No one who is legitimate will ever insist you get crytocurrency of any kind.

“Buy gift cards” is also a scam. Authorities say there’s never any reason to pay for anything with a gift card.

If you receive a call or text message from anyone with any of these requests, hang up, the Sheriff’s Office says.
