2024 Rabies Clinics

FREDERICK, MD. (LG)   A fall rabies clinic is being held at Thurmont Community Park, on September 22, 2024, from 11:30 am until 2:00 p.m.

The Frederick County Health Department encourages pet owners to bring their dogs, cats and ferrets.  “So, the rabies vaccine protects against the rabies virus. We don’t care if you come to our clinic, if you go to any of the other clinics, or a private Vet. What we really care about is making sure that if your pet has an encounter with an infected wild animal, that they are protected against the virus, and the rabies vaccine does just that”, said Alicia Evangelista, Program Director of the Environmental Health Community Services.

To date Frederick County has 30 confirmed rabid animals in 2024.  “Why are our numbers so high? We attribute that to education of our folks here in Frederick County. Our farmers know what they are looking for. We are the only county in the State of Maryland that has animal control like we do, and if there are questions or concerns people call them, and they help these folks out.  And if we need to ship for rabies testing, they are helping to make that decision.”

Not only can wildlife be infected with rabies, but also dogs, cats, cows and bats.
