Missing Swimmer From New York Recovered From Liberty Reservoir In Carroll County

The Sheriff’s Office says he failed to resurface while swimming.

Finksburg, Md (KM) The body of a missing swimmer from New York was recovered on Saturday, July 5th, 2025 from Liberty Reservoir in Finksburg.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says search efforts began on Thursday, July 3rd, 2025, after Smith Veras, 20, failed to resurface while swimming in the Reservoir.

A large number of agencies responded to assist the Sheriff’s Office, including the Baltimore Environmental Police, Maryland State Police Search Operations, the Natural Resources Police Dive Team, the Howard County Fire Department Search Operations and the Gamber and Community Fire Company.

After two days or searching, Veras’ body was located and brought to the surface. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says it does not suspect foul play, but the investigation is continuing.

Veras’ family from Queens, New York, was staying nearby, and was notified of the outcome..

In the news release announcing the recovery of Veas’s body, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says “we extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of Smith Veras during this tragic time.”
