Police say this prohibition is in effect for six months.
Hagerstown, Md (KM) A temporary ordinance was passed in Hagerstown which prohibits lodging or sleeping in public places within city limits.
Police say under the law, no one can sleep in parks, sidewalks and city plazas; also city streets,, parking lots and parking decks are off limits along with public buildings and open public places, and vehicles parked in public spaces. .Authorities say no one can use tarps, tents or makeshift shelters to lodge or sleep on city properties.
The only exceptions are city-sponsored events which involve overnight stays.
Penalties for violators include a 500-dollar fine, up to 60 days in jail, and being told to vacate the area. Violators could also be referred to a housing or social service agency.
This is a six-month temporary ordinance which will expire on February 8th, 2026 unless extended by the Mayor and City Council, police say.
