Frederick, Md (DG) – Severe storms in Carroll County turned deadly Thursday evening when a 13-year-old boy drowned after being swept into a drainage pipe near Mount Airy Middle School.
Emergency crews were called to Watersville Road around 5:30 p.m. after reports that the teen had been caught in rapidly rising floodwaters. A police officer and firefighters tried to pull him out, but the powerful current and narrow pipe made rescue attempts nearly impossible.
The flooding was triggered by a stormwater pond that burst during the heavy downpour, sending a surge of water through the area. Multiple agencies, including divers, joined the search, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials are reminding families to keep children away from moving water during severe weather.
