Frederick, Md (KM) A Brunswick man is going off to prison for a long time. In Frederick County Circuit Court on Monday, Juwaun Terry Stewart, 19, was sentenced to life plus 20 years incarceration for the murder of  Tammy Sue Coates, 61. He pleaded guilty on February 19th, 2025,  to 1st-degree murder and 1st-degree rape.

Coates was found on January 22nd, 2024 by her daughter unresponsive in her home in the 300 block of Ninth Avenue in Brunswick.   She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner ruled the death of a homicide due to multiple stab wounds and asphyxia resulting from strangulation. The victim had also been raped.

The Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office says the investigation, which included interviews with multiple witnesses, cell phone records, surveillance footage and Stewart GPS monitor, determined  that he was in the victim’s home on January 17th, 2024.

Witnesses say Steward had asked Coates if he could brush the snow off of her car for money. She said she did not need  assistance and tried to send him away. The next day, the defendant’s ankle monitor was found lying in the victim’s backyard.

Following the sentence, State’s Attorney Charlie Smith said “this is an extremely egregious case that would have been death penalty eligible not so long ago. The community needs to understand that some teenagers are capable of extremely brutal and horrific crimes, and should be punished according to the crime, not just their age.”

Stewart was a juvenile when the murder took place.

Coates’ daughter described how the crime affected her life in a Victim Impact Statement. “I am unsure how I can ever put into words the impact of losing my mother in such a horrific way has impacted not only my life, but my family’s as well,”: she said. “This is an experience no one s should; have to experience in their life. I will never be the same person after this life-altering event.”

The victim’s  niece addressed the court in her Victim Impact Statement. “{Mr. Stewart} will be allowed to serve a single sentence while so many other will serve their own sentences because of Mr. Stewart’s actions,” she said. “My aunt was finally finding her place in the world and was aspiring to do great things when Mr. Stewart robbed her of that opportunity.”

As part of his sentence, Stewart will be required to register as a sex offender for life, and will be under the supervision of the Sex Offender Management Team.
