Frederick, Md (KM) School shootings around the country often get a lot of media attention, and school systems in the US are taking steps to keep children safe;  and that includes Frederick County.  Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cheryl Dyson spoke about that during a recent appearance on WFMD”s “Morning News Express.”

“We have our standard response protocols which are uniform practice plans used across  all the schools for emergencies such as severe weather, fires and intruders. We investigate every threat that comes into the schools,” she said.

Along with that, Dr. Dyson says the state requires every school to have an threat assessment management team in each school to prepare in case of emergencies.. “We do have other protocols like we keep our outside doors locked. We keep internal doors locked so we can keep children safe,” she says.

But the Superintendent also gives credit to the school resource officers. “One of biggest assets is our partnership with our school resources officers. We’re so grateful to the city and Sheriff {Chuck} Jenkins for assigning one  to every high school and they do make their way to middle and elementary when we do  need them,” says Dr. Dyson.

She also says these school resource officers often act as mentors for many students.

With all the protocols and emergency plans in place, Dr. Dyson says sometimes it comes down to students reporting suspicious activities to school officials. “We always try to remind our students as we investigate threats ‘if you see something, say something. And if you see something on social media, report it; don’t repost it.'” she says.
