Rockville Woman Dies Following Pedestrian Crash; Police Seek Information

87-year-old victim was struck at busy intersection in November; investigation remains ongoing.

Gaithersburg, MD (JK) – The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that claimed the life of an 87-year-old Rockville woman.

Investigators say Vipa Sankanung was struck by a vehicle on Friday, November 21, 2025, at around 2:53 p.m. Officers from the Rockville City Police Department responded to the intersection of East Jefferson Street and Rollins Avenue after receiving reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a 2019 Honda Pilot.

According to investigators, Sankanung was walking north across Rollins Avenue when she was hit by the SUV as it turned left from southbound East Jefferson Street onto eastbound Rollins Avenue. The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under review.

Sankanung was transported to a local hospital, where she later died on November 28 from injuries sustained in the collision. Police say the Collision Reconstruction Unit was only recently notified of her death, prompting the ongoing investigation.
