Rockville, Md. (DG) – Montgomery County Police say a major DNA breakthrough has led to charges in two decades-old sexual assault cases, and investigators believe there could be more victims.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Carl Rice Jr., a Virginia man now facing multiple counts including first-degree rape, kidnapping, sex offenses, and assault tied to attacks in 1988 and 1990. Police say one victim was grabbed and sexually assaulted after leaving the Friendship Heights Metro station on June 24, 1988, while another was attacked after a man who called himself Kevin offered her a ride and then drove her to Bethesda on September 19, 1990.
Earlier this year, detectives received a CODIS DNA match connected to evidence from the 1988 case, helping identify Rice as the suspect.
He is currently serving a prison sentence in Virginia for rape and sexual assault. Montgomery County detectives say they believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to contact police.
