Frederick, MD (JK) – Frederick County is celebrating its long-standing commitment to agriculture with the launch of a new initiative designed to recognize farmers who have permanently preserved their land.
The County’s Office of Agriculture recently unveiled the “Forever Farmland” sign along with the official rollout of the Forever Farmland Signage Program. The effort honors landowners who have placed their farms into permanent agricultural preservation, ensuring the land remains dedicated to farming for generations to come.
Farmland preservation has been a priority in Frederick County for nearly five decades. The county established its first farmland preservation easement in 1977. Since then, more than 80,900 acres have been preserved through partnerships with state and federal programs. Of that total, nearly 78,000 acres are permanently protected.
County officials say the new signage program is meant to serve as a visible reminder of the farmers who continue to shape the region’s landscape, economy, and heritage. The signs will be placed on preserved farms across the county, highlighting their contribution to maintaining a strong agricultural community.
Distribution of the Forever Farmland signs is expected to continue throughout the spring. Landowners who wish to arrange for pickup or delivery may contact Shannon O’Neil at 301-600-1411 or SONeil@FrederickCountyMD.gov.
