Frederick, Md. (DG) – Some communities in Maryland will be receiving new FEMA flood mitigation investments, which total 6.7 million dollars for several states including Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The funding is part of a broader 250 million dollar national effort covering more than 100 flood reduction projects. FEMA says the awards are distributed through its Flood Mitigation Assistance program and Swift Current initiative to reduce long-term disaster risks.
Despite a 67-day lapse in federal appropriations, funding continues to move forward. Maryland will receive over $823,000 to elevate two structures above the floodplain to keep the buildings and contents from suffering any major damage and reduce the threat to life safety. Other states will receive funds to be used for home elevations, planning studies, and property buyouts to help limit future flood damage.
