Greenbelt, MD (DG) – A Clarksville man is facing federal charges in what investigators describe as a long-running cyber intrusion scheme tied to a Maryland medical system. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 41-year-old Matthew Bathula has been indicted on charges including unauthorized access to protected computers and aggravated identity theft.
Authorities say the alleged activity spanned several years, from 2016 through 2024, while Bathula worked as a pharmacy clinical specialist. During that time, he is accused of accessing computer systems without permission and collecting sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, images, and other personal data.
Investigators say the scheme affected nearly 200 victims across the country. Bathula allegedly used a variety of cyber techniques to gain access to personal and professional accounts, including email, cloud storage, and social media platforms.
Officials say the case also involves allegations that spyware was installed on workplace computers to monitor and record individuals without their knowledge. If convicted, Bathula could face up to 10 years in prison.
