Martinsburg, WV (DG) – Authorities in Berkeley County, West Virginia are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened early Friday morning outside a local bar. Sheriff Rob Blair says the incident began around 1 a.m. when a man allegedly threatened to shoot up the Green Frog Bar along Route 45. Deputies and state police responded to the scene and located the man sitting in a vehicle nearby.
According to officials, the man did not comply with commands from law enforcement and displayed a handgun. Officers then opened fire. Emergency crews were called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
No officers were injured during the encounter. The sheriff described the situation as tragic but emphasized that deputies acted in response to a serious threat. West Virginia State Police are leading the investigation, and the findings will be reviewed by the Berkeley County Prosecutor’s Office. Four state troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave.
