Baltimore, MD (JK) – A Mount Airy man was arrested Tuesday after Maryland State Police say he attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 695 while using flashing emergency-style lights on his vehicle.
Police identified the suspect as 59-year-old Eric Baummer. Troopers say he was driving a black 2014 Ford Explorer on the outer loop of I-695 near Washington Boulevard around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday when the incident occurred.
According to investigators, the targeted motorist called 9-1-1 after the Explorer activated blue and white flashing lights in an apparent attempt to pull the vehicle over. The driver did not stop and continued traveling while remaining on the phone with dispatchers.
State police say Baummer eventually drove ahead of the vehicle, changed lanes in front of it, and exited the beltway at Hollins Ferry Road. The motorist, later identified as an off-duty military law enforcement officer, followed the Explorer to a gas station in the 4300 block of Hollins Ferry Road in Lansdowne.
Troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack and officers with the Baltimore County Police Department responded to the scene and arrested Baummer without incident. He has been charged with impersonating a police officer.
Maryland State Police are asking anyone who may have experienced a similar encounter connected to the investigation to contact the Golden Ring Barrack at 410-780-2700.
The investigation remains active.
