A gun buyback event in Shepherdstown turned into a competing effort to preserve firearms instead of destroy them.
West Virginia Freedom Caucus Chairman Chris Anders joined more than 40 supporters outside a buyback event hosted by the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church on May 2nd. Working alongside Martinsburg business owner Dave of DS Gunworks, the group offered cash to gun owners willing to sell privately rather than exchange firearms for gift cards and have them destroyed.
Organizers say several collectible and functioning firearms were preserved, including vintage Colt revolvers and classic .22 rifles. One Colt revolver reportedly worth several hundred dollars was nearly destroyed for a fifty-dollar gift card before being purchased by participants.
Church leaders contacted law enforcement, but officers determined the private transactions were lawful. Anders says the effort focused on protecting private property rights and preserving firearm history.
