Maryland is becoming the first state in the nation to adopt a statewide law aimed at supporting local news organizations.
The new Local News for Maryland Communities Act Of 2026 requires state agencies to spend at least half of their advertising budgets with Maryland-based news outlets, including print, digital, and broadcast organizations.
Supporters say the measure is designed to strengthen local journalism without creating new taxes or spending programs because it redirects existing advertising dollars already being spent by the state. Advocates say the law will help keep residents informed on important local issues while supporting newsroom jobs and community reporting across Maryland.
Backers also hope the legislation could become a model for other states looking to address the decline of local news coverage. Frederick County Senator Karen Lewis Young is one of the sponsors of the bill.
