Sharpsburg, MD (JK) – Emergency crews responded Tuesday afternoon to a serious bicycle accident along the C&O Canal Towpath near the 67-mile marker at Mountain Lock Recreation Area in southern Washington County.
According to dispatch information, Company 11, Company 19 and EMS 1814 were alerted shortly after 3 p.m. for a reported fall injury along the towpath. Initial responding units included Utility 11 with ATV 11 and UTV 11, along with Captain 11. Additional Company 11 units were dispatched as the incident developed.
Rescuers reached the scene on foot because of the close proximity of the injured bicyclist to the towpath. Crews found the patient approximately 15 feet down an embankment after reportedly going off the trail.
Firefighters and rescue personnel used UTV 11 and a low-angle rope rescue system to safely remove the patient from the embankment using a stokes basket. The bicyclist was then transported by ambulance to a landing zone established at Station 11, where Engine Tanker 11 was standing by.
Maryland State Police Trooper 3 also responded to the incident.
