Maryland Governor Wes Moore visited Monocacy Elementary School on Wednesday as part of his Delivering for Maryland Tour, highlighting investments in public education and affordable housing in Frederick County.
During the visit, Governor Moore greeted students and spent time in the classroom of targeted intervention teacher ALonna Soward-Puryear, who was named the 2026 Maryland State Teacher of the Year last fall. Soward-Puryear is the third educator from Frederick County Public Schools to receive the statewide honor.
The governor also toured the school’s media center, where he met with students from several grade levels. Students asked questions about Moore’s role as governor and discussed their own school experiences. Moore also spoke with students about public service, emphasizing that people can serve their communities in many different ways by helping others.
Soward-Puryear has spent the past year participating in the Maryland Teacher of the Year program, which includes professional development and advocacy opportunities alongside honorees from counties across the state.
