A chaotic scene unfolded Thursday evening at Meritus Medical Center when a stabbing was reported inside the hospital’s cafeteria area. Washington County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the hospital around 8:15 p.m. after a female security guard was attacked by a man with a knife.
As deputies entered the building, they were directed toward a hallway where the suspect was located and still armed with a large kitchen knife. Police issued commands for him to drop the weapon. At that point, the suspect dropped to his knees and began stabbing himself in the neck.
Deputies immediately used a Taser, which allowed them to take the suspect into custody and prevent further injuries to hospital staff or patients. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Timothy Wallech of Hagerstown, received medical treatment and is currently held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center. He is charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
