Farmers in Frederick, Washington, Carroll, Howard, and Montgomery counties could receive relief after a devastating April freeze damaged crops across Maryland. Governor Wes Moore has ordered state agencies to provide assistance while the state seeks federal disaster aid. Officials say the freeze caused catastrophic losses to orchards, vineyards, and farm fields, with some areas reporting more than 90 percent losses in apple, peach, and barley crops.
The governor’s directive includes efforts to speed up available aid, support wineries impacted by grape losses, and encourage consumers to buy Maryland-grown products. State leaders say recovery for many farms and vineyards could take years.
