MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD (JK) — Montgomery County has expanded its online Flood Risk Explorer, adding newly completed flood-risk mapping for the Middle Rock Creek and Lower Rock Creek watersheds as the Atlantic hurricane season begins.
The interactive tool, which launched in December with mapping for the Sligo Creek watershed, highlights areas that face increased flooding risks during extreme rainstorms under current and projected future climate conditions.
County Executive Marc Elrich said the expanded mapping will help residents better understand flood risks in their neighborhoods and take steps to prepare before severe weather strikes.
Officials encourage residents to know their flood risk, sign up for Alert Montgomery emergency notifications, protect their homes and businesses, consider flood insurance and stay weather aware.
The Flood Risk Explorer is part of the County’s Comprehensive Flood Management Plan. Montgomery County also monitors 40 flood sensors in high-risk locations and uses a Storm Operations Center to coordinate responses before and during major storms.
Residents should report flooding to MC 311 or the Montgomery County Police non-emergency line after hours. Officials continue to remind drivers: Turn around, don’t drown. Never drive through flooded roadways.
According to FEMA, flooding is the nation’s most common and costly natural disaster, and even one inch of water can cause up to $25,000 in damage.
