Cancer patients in West Virginia will soon have greater access to a treatment designed to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy.
A new law known as Jessica Huffman’s Law requires health insurance carriers to cover scalp cooling systems beginning with 2027 policies. The devices work by reducing blood flow to the scalp, limiting the amount of chemotherapy that reaches hair follicles. Named for nursing leader and cancer survivor Jessica Huffman, the law addresses a treatment that can cost around $1,800.
West Virginia is among a small number of states requiring the coverage, a move aimed at improving quality of life for patients during cancer treatment.
