Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown is urging Immigration and Customs Enforcement to halt plans to convert a vacant Washington County warehouse into a 1,500-bed immigration detention facility.
Brown is calling on ICE to complete a full Environmental Impact Statement, arguing the agency has not adequately addressed concerns about environmental, infrastructure, and public health impacts. The heads of several Maryland state agencies also submitted comments saying important studies have not been made public.
Supporters of the project, including Washington County officials and DHS, say the facility would serve primarily as a short-term processing center rather than a long-term detention site, could create more than 1,100 jobs, and would include on-site medical care and regular independent inspections.
